A city for all seasons

Modern day Queenstown is New Zealand's centre for adventure tourism - offering skiing and other winter sports, jet boating, whitewater rafting, bungy jumpingand hot air ballooning as well as the less adventuresome passtimes of hiking/tramping and fly fishing

The area is famous for its scenery especially in autumn and features beautiful lakes and mountains and picturesque villages like Arrowtown and Glenorchy. This scenery has made it the site for the filming of many movies - The Lord of the Rings Trilogy being the most noted.

It also has a vibrant night life.

A golden history

William Rees first settled in the area in 1860 and the discovery, soon after, of gold in the Shotover River resulted in a gold rush. The population soared but the ceasing of gold mining in 1900 saw the population drop to 200. The current residential population in Queenstown is more than 8,500.

Queenstown was aptly named as being 'fit for Queen Victoria'
