Because there's so much ground water it's very green - especially up in the mountains - and there's lots of wildlife.

The main resort is Batsi, set around a bay shaped like an inverted U. The bottom of the U (North) is the beach – lovely and sandy. The right-hand side of the U – the East side – is the town, with the small harbour round the corner. The left-hand side of the U – the West - is where the villa Galazio is, where we stay.

Behind the beach are tavernas, apartments, the medical centre and a couple of small hotels – .The first taverna – at the North-West corner – is the Cava D’Oro which is very popular; the one next door, the Kadouni, is better and there’s a nice little bar beside it.

The beach at this end is nicely sheltered by tall trees and is very sandy. The middle stretch of the beach is a bit exposed to the wind, and the town end is busy. There are beach beds and umbrellas for hire, and (free) changing cabins and showers. The beach is mainly sandy with a few stretches of shingle.

Behind the beach at the town end are more tavernas including a very Greek fish place; there’s also a Chinese restaurant (!!).

There’s a lot of life around the harbour – cafes in the old boat sheds and some nice tavernas – . In terms of bars, there are nice ones next to the boat shed cafes. There is also one on the road out from the town centre towards the War Memorial, a good place to watch the sunset. Basic shopping is easy – there’s the bakery, a couple of mini-markets and there are good greengrocers – the fruit is normally fabulous!

If you go past the War Memorial on the minor road you come to Stivari, a small beach Further on there’s Delavoya (about a mile around the bay) The beach is partly nudist. Further on round is Aghia Marina, a lovely beach with a good taverna that is only open at lunch times. In the evening in Batsi is the promenade, when everybody walks up and down before diner; there’s also an open-air cinema.

There’s good tavernas out of town, especially the Balcony of the Aegean at Aprovato which is on the mountain side about 1000 foot up and has wonderful views of the sunset. Great steaks too!

We advise hiring a car for a few days – talk to John http://www.androstours.com There are lovely beaches up the West coast, especially at Felos to the North of Gavrion. Korthi is worth driving to and there are lots of wonderful walks. There's old monasteries and churches, too - some dating back to the 12th Century.

Buses go from Batsi to the Hora, which is charming. The Modern Art Museum and the Archaeological Museum are well worth visiting, but note that the siesta is strictly observed and the whole place closes in the afternoons! .
