Tiananmen Square: Tiananmen Square
  • Tip Rating:
  • Tiananmen Square - an immense square in the heart of the capital. Mao Zedong had it built during his leadership. He once reviewed huge parades in the square but unfortunately it is now remembered mainly as the site where government soldiers attacked thousands of pro-democracy demonstrators in 1989, killing hundreds and injuring 10,000. Having seen all this on TV, it was quite an experience to be standing on the square imagining what it must have been like that day - just unreal.

    Tiananmen Square: Tiananmen Gate
  • Tip Rating:
  • Tiananmen Gate Tower is at the north end of Tiananmen Square.

This was the first gate of the Imperial City and therefore was designed to be very grand.

This ornamental pillar is carved out of marble and is one of two in Tiananmen Square. Each pillar is entwined by a devine dragon which is engraved in relief.

    Things To Do: Countdown Clock
  • Tip Rating:
  • This was the countdown clock in Tiananmen Square which was counting down to the handover of Hong Kong back to China. It was stopped 2 ½ hours into July 1st 1997, the official handover date. Apparently the clock has been moved to the Great Wall and placed in an historical museum there.

    Tiananmen Square: Chairman's Mao Zedong
  • Tip Rating:
  • Chairman's Mao Zedong Picture on Tiananmen Gate - The Chairmans waxy remains lie under crystal in a nearby mausoleum. Mao's colossal portrait is the dominating feature.

The place above his receding hairline is where he declared the People's Republic on 1 October 1949. You can stand on the historic spot and relive the moment, for a fee of course.

    Forbidden City: The Forbidden City
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Forbidden City is one of the architectural wonders of the world. This complex took 17 years to build and was once home to 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties, thousands of eunuchs, and countless concubines, servants, and mandarins. Designed to keep the emperor in and the rest of humanity out, the city of walls-within-walls was governed by strict rules and taboos.

The Forbidden City is made up of elaborate gardens, spacious courtyards and grand ceremonial halls.

The Forbidden City complex includes – the Watch Tower, Hall of Supreme Harmoney and Medium Harmony, the Meridian Gate, Gate of Supreme Harmony, Hall of Protective Harmony and Hall of Heavenly Peace, the Hall of Union and Peace and Hall of Earthly Peace, the Imperial Gardens and the North Gate.
