Frankfurt which is the headquarters of Germany's principal stock exchange, the German Bundesbank and the new European Central bank, has the highest percentage of foreigners along with the most drugs and crime and the biggest budget for culture. Frankfurt had to reinvent itself after wartime air raids destroyed most of its historical monuments and well-preserved medieval quarter. This financial capital on the River Main hard-headed and rich; its glass and concrete skyscrapers are occupied by banks or insurance companies and its nickname is "Mainhattan.". In addition to finance, its wealth is generated by industry, particularly in engineering, chemicals and printing and publishing. As a result, most travellers who travel to Frankfurt are not so much there for the sightseeing but for the the trade fair or one of the 50,000 congresses, conferences and seminars held each year. The airport which is huge, is the 2nd busiest in the world.

Frankfurt airport was a place I came to know quite well over a three week period - a lot of my connecting flights were routed through there. I stayed on two occasions (at the begining and end of my 3 weeks) and just transited through the other times. On my first arrival in Frankfurt, I was supposed to connect on to St Petersburg but missed the flight. My first reaction was to not waste a minute since I was stuck there overnight. I found a hotel desk at the airport, booked into a nearby airport hotel, jumped on their shuttle, checked myself in, dropped off my carry-on (my suitcase had gone missing or gone on to Russia, or who really knew at that stage). Jumped back on their shuttle to the airport, then caught the train into Frankfurt. I hadn't quite been prepared to explore Frankfurt this early in my trip but by this time it was mid afternoon and I wanted to cram in as much as I could before the light faded, so with map in hand I just started walking. One of 'a first' experience I had that evening was standing in the city thinking there must have been a fire somewhere, it looked like there were tiny bits of ash in the air. Duh!! It was lightly snowing! now don't laugh, some of us actually grew up without seeing it snow or experiencing it (as you will read in my St Petersburg experience). I must have looked quite a sight standing there in wonderment of what these people probably wished would just 'go away'. My later stay in Frankfurt was more relaxed, I was exhausted after my whirlwind solo travelling and just did enjoyed the nicer weather and did some shopping. I never managed to venture out of the city centre as there was more than enough there to do and see.
