  • There is not a lot to the downtown area of old Wylie but there are some lovely old buildings and some shops worth paying a visit to. On Mothers Day in 1993 a tornado hit Wylie destroying dozens of homes and businesses. Fortunately there was only one fatality.

  • Further disaster happened for Wylie in 1998. In December that year, two separate fires, one on 9th Street and the other on 11th, destroyed or damaged many businesses. Since then the downtown area has been in the process of recovering and restoring.

  • This is a small park as you head into the downtown main street area off Hwy 78. On Thursday evenings during June and July, there are outdoor concerts "Live" in Olde City Park . The concerts begin at 7.30pm.

  • One of the murals in the town is located on a wall alongside the Olde City Park. There is some great detail which depicts the early days of Wylie as a cotton and railroad town.

    Things To Do: Onion Capital

  • Another Mural is further down Ballard Street and again shows the significance of the railroad to Wylie's economy. By the 1930's and 40's Wylie had a reputation as the 'onion capital of the world' because of its reputation for the growing and marketing of sweet onions which were in great demand during those years.

  • The Wylie News is the City of Wylie’s official newspaper and was established in 1948 although it is only since 1997 that it has resided in this building. It is believed that the building was constructed in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s and was a dry goods store. Prior to the newspaper moving in, there was a dance studio set up here.

Things To Do: The Brown House

  • Not literally a brown house, its actually more of a mauve colour but the original owners were William and Mattie Brown. The house was built in 1905. Thomas and his partner originally purchased over 31 acres when they arrived in Wylie.

The house has 6 rooms downstairs and one large room upstairs. If you are into Queen Ann style architecture, then you will probably find lots of wonderful attributes incorporated in the house pertaining to the Victorian era. The house is on the register for Texas Historic Landmarks.

  • Saint Anthony Catholic Church was established in 1890 and the first church was built in 1890. Unfortunate fire destroyed the original building in 1900. The church then rebuilt into the present wooden church.

Wylie is about a 5 minute drive up highway 78 from where I am currently staying. I actually hope to settle down in the Wylie area this Spring for the next 4 years before moving back to Florida. I can't imagine anyone finding 22 tips about the town. ;-)

Beautiful, this is as I imagine a 'real' American town to look like. Love the Brown House and the B & B also
