White Rock Travel Guide: 25 reviews and 74 photos
White Rock is a small suburb of Dallas County 10 miles north of downtown Dallas. When it was established in the late 1840’s it had a post office and little else. By 1900 with only a population of 7, it was no longer listed on the Map of Dallas. Today it is the largest public recreation area in Dallas attracting joggers, cyclists, boaters, fishermen and families all year round. White Rock Park covers an area of 2,115 acres, 1,077 acres if that is lake surface. It was been described in its early days as the ‘soft soul of the city’.
White Rock Lake is the centrepiece of the park. It is a manmade reservoir which was created in 1911 when White Rock Creek was dammed. The shoreline takes up 9 ½ miles and there is more than 1,000 wooded acres which provides a sanctity for animal and plant life. Amongst the oaks, pecan, sweet gum and cottonwoods are around 33 species of mammals living there not to mention the rattlesnakes, turtles, lizards, frogs etc. There is also no less than 217 species of birds residing on or near the lake. Fishermen have a field day with 19 kinds of fish who swim these waters.
A lot of the park facilities were constructed during the 1930’s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. There are bridges, playgrounds, drinking water fountains, restrooms, and picnic pavilions with more than 200 picnic tables being provided.
