Local Customs: Laid Back and Relaxing
  • Tip Rating:
  • Waxahachie is very laid back and relaxing - at least at the weekends it is. There are restaurants and cafes around and of course a great selection of shopping of antiques and gifts. Or you can just select one of the park benches and sit in the sun.

    Local Customs: Gingerbread Trail
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Gingerbread Trail is held every June and has been an annual event for 35 years. You are taken on a tour all the wonderful historic homes in Waxahachie where you will see styles of Victorian, Gingerbread, Gothic Revival, and Queen Anne. Five private homes are open to inspection and have their own stories on their restoration and possibly even ghost stories. You can also tour some of the historically recognised buildings and view vintage automobiles which are parked around the downtown square.

    Local Customs: Restrooms
  • Tip Rating:
  • Most of the larger Antique/Gift stores have restrooms in them. I didn't see any public ones around the square so its handy to know.

Local Customs: Scarborough Faire Renaissance Festival
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a well known Renaissance Festival every year for 8 weekends from April to end of May on a 35 acre property. In a setting of the 16th century, you can step back into the time of King Henry VIII.

There is Food and fantasy, plenty of entertainment and shopping. Scarborough Faire the Renaissance Festival is one of the largest, most popular Renaissance Festivals in the nation.

    Local Customs: Faire General Info
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Faire usually begins about mid April through to the last weekend of May and is only open at weekends but includes Memorial Day (Monday closest to the 26th). The gates open at 10.00am through to 7.00pm. Various shows are running right throughout the day all around the grounds. With a parade being held around midday or so of a lot of the characters.

Prices as at 2003 - Adult $16.99, Child (5-12) $6.00 but if you go to a Diamond Shamrock Gas Station you can pick up coupons which will give you $2.00 off your ticket price when you buy it. Children under 4 yrs are free. They take most credit cards, travellers cheques and even local cheques.

There are ATM machines at two locations - the Main Souvenir Shoppe and the Pecan Grove Souvenir Shoppe. Everything within the park is paid for with cash (unlike some events which make you buy coupons up front to use).

Local Customs: Entertainment at the Faire
  • Tip Rating:
  • Glass Harmonica - Donal Hinely was amazing. He had many glass of varying levels of water and was rubbing the tops of them which gave out amazing music (if that's what you can call it). He played with incredible ease 'Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring' (not a slow piece) and while the reverberation of these filled glasses lingered in air, the crowd was in awe.

Local Customs: Mud Slinging at the Faire
  • Tip Rating:
  • Aside from watching two grown men flinging and coating themselves in mud, knowing that you don't have to do their washing, these two along with the compare were hillarious. The show went on for quite some time before it got to the dirty stuff but it was worth hanging around for. Beware, if you go to the faire and want to see this show, do not sit in the front 5 rows, you are likely to get splattered with mud!!

    Local Customs: Take a Ride
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are various rides to amuse the children or young at heart. There is the Hippogrif Swing, The dragon Swing, the Three Ship Swing and many others. All at a price of course.

    Local Customs: Mud Sculpture
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the mud sculptures that was being designed. This 'fairy' was really playing up to the part - as do all the other characters there.

    Local Customs: Falconry
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the shows on dislay is the Falconry. The sport of falconry was enjoyed by all, but practiced mostly by the King and noblemen.

There is plenty of open seating or standing room under the trees.

The photo is not of 233 Patrick. The photo is a house on Main St. just around the corner notable for the extremely tall front door. The Queen Anne Victorian at 233 Patrick is a full three stories with a rounded tower on the left corner. 03/15/2007

Loved the building with the pillars, reminds me of 'Gone with the Wind'. As for the National Historic Register can I get my extension on that - lol

Great, old architecture there, indeed. Haha, I have to see Bonnie and Clyde again to find Waxahachie there. A lot of interesting information and beautiful pictures.
