San Antonio's is the eighth largest city in the U.S. and the 2nd biggest in Texas. Located in south central Texas at the edge of the Texas Hill Country and the Gulf Coastal plains, it is the seat of Bexar (pronounced Bear) Country. The city history predates the founding of the United States. Indians once thrived here hunting deer throughout the Texas Hill Country. In 1718, a group of Spanish missionaries arrived bringing religion and an outpost to the base of the foothills. They named the mission San Antonio de Valero, which later came to be known simply as the Alamo.
A small handful of Spanish and German immigrants began building and the mission all of a sudden found itself the centre of a little town. The Alamo today is now 280 years old and is synonymous with San Antonio and all things Texan. |
| | Millions of visitors come to San Antonio every year for business and pleasure. The famed River Walk, Tower of the Americas, the Mercado Mexican-style marketplace, theme parks, art museums are well patronised. San Antonio certainly lives up to its reputation as one of the top tourist destination in the country, It has probably been my favourite city to visit in Texas. More in my Travelogues |
