Heidelberg has inspired and fascinated people for many centuries. Painters such as Rottmann and Trubner created their impressions of the city as well as writers and poets such as Mark Twain and Clemens Brentano put pen to paper to produce their great inspirational works. Heidelberg lured artists from all over the world with its location and beauty. Great Composers such as Schumann and Brahms also encapsulated their impressions of this town and beautiful landscape in their timeless music.
It is also the site for the discovery of the Heidelberg Man, which has given us evidence of the earliest human life in Europe with a 500.000-year-old jawbone.
...Out of a billowy upheaval of vivid green foliage...rises Heidelberg Castle, with empty window arches, ivy-mailed battlements, moldering towers -- the Lear of inanimate nature, -- deserted, discrowned, beaten by the storms, but royal still, and beautiful."
Mark Twain, "A Tramp Abroad"
Heidelberg was completely rebuilt in the 17th-century baroque style after Louis XIV all but destroyed the province. Visitors first approaching Heidelberg will immediately notice the ruined Schloss (castle), which was built in the typical local red Neckar sandstone over several centuries. Heidelberg is located approximately 80KM to the south of Frankfurt and is sometimes described as being at the heart of Europe. Given that European borders are in a constant state of flux this is probably no longer true! |

Maurizioago Fri May 9, 2008 17:40 UTC I'd like to visit this town. Ciao! | Helga67 Tue May 9, 2006 09:12 UTC A beautiful city that I don't want to miss on my next trip to Germany. | traveldave Fri Jan 27, 2006 23:29 UTC I was supposed to visit Heidelberg when I was in Europe back in 1982, but I never made it there (long story). Looks like I missed a beautiful city in a beautiful setting. | bugalugs Sat Jun 25, 2005 21:42 UTC I Liked the gate leading to the Gun Garden, but never heard of a gun garden before. The car sharing thing sounds a really good idea. |
