It was early morning when we were there and the light wasn't exactly right, but I'm sure it would be even lovelier later in the day.

One of the densest concentrations of refineries are found in the Houston area. The oil companies are located along the Houston Ship Channel where it is more sheltered from bad weather that comes up from the Gulf. The construction of the refineries began during World War 1 and were expanded during World War II. Another large refinery is south of the city at Texas City.

If you are interested in seeing an up close view of the refineries etc, you can take a boat ride on the Sam Houston Inspection Ship for around 90 mins through the deep water channel. You can see all the large container ships, barges and tugs. Another good view is from the San Jacinto Battlefield on the other side of the channel.

Peg06262 Sat Jun 27, 2009 18:45 UTC Also, we took a three and five-year old and neither were interested--maybe if there was something to see (a crane loading, a boat moving), it might be different or maybe the tour is best for older kids. We went on a Saturday and nothing was going on. | bugalugs Wed Jun 27, 2007 21:48 UTC Galveston oh Galveston I.....sorry I just felt like singing hahaha. A permit to take a photo of a shopping mall! Good grief! Wayne would love the Space Centre, not for me though I have my head in the clouds as it is I cant be spaced out as well hahaha | spgood301 Mon Sep 11, 2006 21:36 UTC Congrats on a really good look at Houston-a fun city. If you can drive there, you can drive anywhere. Now, about the weather... :-) | TheWanderingCamel Sun May 21, 2006 16:42 UTC Do you know, I've been going to Huston regularly for the last 30 years--- and I must have all of a dozen photos! One day I'll play tourist. One day there and you have the driving habits of Houstonians totally sussed! leyle |
