  • Down the end of a small park is the Water Wall. This is reported to be Houston's most photographed site. It is a striking U-shaped fountain which has water cascading down its inside and outside walls.

  • It was early morning when we were there and the light wasn't exactly right, but I'm sure it would be even lovelier later in the day.

    Galleria: The Galleria - Westheimer

  • The Galleria Westheimer has got to be Houstons best shopping mall or at very least, the most well known. The mall is set beneath large glass atriums and has over 300 shops and restaurants with many designer brands featured.

There is an ice skating rink on the bottom which can best be viewed from the upper levels. Be careful of taking photos here, if the security guard sees you he will ask if you have a permit.

There are no signs up to tell you that you can't but fortunately I had my photos already. If you do want to do it legally, you need to go to the managers office and ask for a permit.

  • In 2002 the Astros bought back the naming rights to the field after the collapse of Enron. The field is home to the Astros baseball team. The first game played here was between the Astros and the New York Yankees. The field has a retractable room for indoor/outdoor playing.

  • This temple celebrates the Chinese Goddess of Heaven. It is quite a colourful temple inside near Chinatown's shopping district.

Having lived in Asia I was quite surprised to find this temple in the heart of a major Texas city.

    Houston Ship Channel: Oil Refineries
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the densest concentrations of refineries are found in the Houston area. The oil companies are located along the Houston Ship Channel where it is more sheltered from bad weather that comes up from the Gulf. The construction of the refineries began during World War 1 and were expanded during World War II.

Another large refinery is south of the city at Texas City.

Houston Ship Channel: Tour of the Ship Channel
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are interested in seeing an up close view of the refineries etc, you can take a boat ride on the Sam Houston Inspection Ship for around 90 mins through the deep water channel. You can see all the large container ships, barges and tugs.

Another good view is from the San Jacinto Battlefield on the other side of the channel.

Also, we took a three and five-year old and neither were interested--maybe if there was something to see (a crane loading, a boat moving), it might be different or maybe the tour is best for older kids. We went on a Saturday and nothing was going on.

Congrats on a really good look at Houston-a fun city. If you can drive there, you can drive anywhere. Now, about the weather... :-)
