I just loved the buildings and shops around downtown Glen Rose. Its very small but still quaint. The centrepiece of course is the courthouse - everything else encircles it. One thing you don't see is the presence of fast food chains to small the modest charm of this town. The square has been quite a popular place for locals to gather since the late 1880's. Farmers would bring their stock animals and other produce to sell. They set up on the west side of the square where there was plenty of shade of old pecan trees.

The courthouse is fairly modest compared to some. It was built in 1893 in late Victorian style and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Local limestone was used for its construction. The first court was held across the road in a local store from Barnards Mill. A log cabin was used later. The third courthouse in 1882 was burned in 1883. It was the first to be built on this site. Unfortunately a lot of valuable records were also destroyed. The present building has a fireproof vault.

This is a really different fountain in the shape of a star which sits out in front of the courthouse and beside the pavilion where the dinosaur track is imbedded.

The first building on this site was the Glen Rose Herald Newspaper which was destroyed by a tornado in 1902. The newspaper rebuilt then sold the building when then went on to house the first indoor picture show in town. Later the first coca-cola bottling plant in Glen Rose moved into the building. From then it has been a skating rink, meat market, shoe repair shop and a home. The building was then bought for the Somervell County Museum. Sitting in a corner of the County museum is an old printing press from that office

This tiny log cabin was established on May 24, 1901 and was discontinued in 1904. It was located in the Hopewell Community of Somervell County and was on the property that later became part of the dam of Squaw Creek Lake. Texas utilities moved all the buildings that were on the farm away. A local lady, Winnie Miller Merrill who was born in 1894 remembered going to this little post office for the mail when she was about 7 yrs old.

The Dinosaur tracks were formed 100,000,000 years ago in this area. For years following their discovery (about 1910), the tracks remained more of a novelty. When the Paluxy river levels were low, Farmers actually caught catfish stranded in them.

This lovely old building was once the First National Bank Building. Constructed of native limestone and built in 1896. Its early days was a saloon. The upper level hosted dances, socials, and stage shows. Later in 1902, it became the home for the First National Bank building. In 1917 the bank had a bit of excitement, it was the scene of a robbery and the shooting of a bandit. Today it is home to the Somervell County Heritage Center.
