Garland is the 10th largest city in Texas, located just northeast of Dallas. It is also the 83rd largest in the USA and was formed from two settlements, Duck Creek and Embree. Incorporated in 1891, the city began as a farming community and known for being the ‘Onion Capital of the World’. The black soil was found to be ideal for cotton which became a primary agricultural product.

With the commencement of World War II, Garland evolved from agricultural to a more industrial community. More and more major companies moved into the area and by 1967, there were some 129 companies paying out over $66 million in their combined payroll. In 10 years the population of Garland doubled. In the early 1980s Garland had one of the lowest poverty rates of cities in the country.

Historic Downtown Garland, which has been selected as one of the top ten downtown squares in Texas is recognised both nationally and regionally as a Main Street City. There is plenty to see and do in Garland.
