Denison is only 75 miles north of Dallas and is located in Northeastern area of Texas in Grayson County which borders Oklahoma. The city was founded in 1872 and was named after the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (M-K-T) Vice-President, George Denison. The M-K-T railroad is known better as the Katy Railroad which has merged with Union Pacific. The railroad played an important role in the growth of the city as did the establishment of Perrin Air Force Base in the 1940’s. The base today falls under the control of Grayson County and serves Denison as a private airport and industrial park.
Grayson County is the 29th largest of 254 counties in Texas and Sherman holds the county seat. Denison is located close by and is the next largest city.
After being designated a Texas Main Street City by the Texas Historical Commission, the residents have worked hard preserve their unique history in restoring homes and buildings to their original character and design. In 1988 it was placed first in its category. Historic walking and driving tours guide visitors through neighbourhoods and the historic downtown arts district.
Denison has grown from a small community to modern city, settled in a gently rolling and wooded terrain which stretches northward to the shores of Lake Texoma and the Red River Valley. It has earned itself nicknames such as "The Infant Wonder," (for the arrival of the Katy Railroad) "The Gateway City," (as being the first welcoming stop for travellers from the north) and "The Katy's Baby.
