Canyon Lake is located in Comal County approximately 12 miles northeast of New Braunfels and 20 miles North of San Antonio. The lake was formed from the Guadalupe River when Canyon Dam was completed in 1964. Its main existence was for flood control and water conservation but out of it also came a recreational paradise. The lake lays claim to 80 miles of shoreline with a surface area of 8,231 acres. From the point where the Guadalupe River flows into the lake, to the dam is approximately 8 miles. The lake’s scenic views are of the rugged hills of the Texas Hill Country and the narrow valleys with high limestone canyons which have been carved away over many years by the Guadelupe river.
Canyon Lake is one of the deepest lakes in Texas with an average depth of 43' and a maximum depth of 130'. Because of the clarity of the water, it is a popular destination for divers as well as providing all forms of water recreation. The area comprises the communities of Sattler, Startzville, Cranes Mill and Hancock, all in Comal County with an estimated population of around 29,000. |
