Keeweechic's Philadelphia

by keeweechic - last update: Aug 3, 2006

Philadelphia is located 100 miles south of New York, 133 miles north of Washington and is the second largest city on the East Coast of the States and because of the city's position at the intersection of the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers, Philadelphia has long been the nation's most important freshwater port. The city lies some 60 miles from the sea. Philadelphia has been an important city right from its founding in 1682 by William Penn and was the centre of the Revolution and was the original capital of the nation. Many aspects of the city’s Revolutionary past have survived in the city. The Declaration of Independence was signed and publicly read here in 1776 and the US Constitution was signed in 1786.

Today, Philadelphia is known as ‘The City of Brotherly Love’ which is a Greek translation, and in fact is the most ethnically diverse city in the US with a mix of Italians, Irish, eastern Europeans and Asians living together amongst the majority black population.

We were travelling by car with friends who lived in New Jersey. We covered some of Bucks County and Lancaster County before driving back to Philadelphia. Parking seemed to be fairly easy in the city as was driving (unlike some big cities). I thought Philly was a pretty city with lovely old historical buildings and horse drawn carriages trotting about the Historical Park area.

"I am well aware of the toil and blood and treasure it will cost us to maintain this declaration, and support and defend these states. Yet through all the gloom I see the rays of ravishing light and glory. I can see that the end is worth all the means. This is our day of deliverance." - John Adams

City Hall looks very impressive. Interesting about the Olympia and the unknown soldier. Not sure if we went over the B. Franklin bridge, will have to ask Wayne, I do tend to forget these things - lol, great page and very descriptive

Philly is a wonderful city, isn't it? I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. Thanks for the info re: Peddler's Village. I'll add that to my list of things to see.
