Lancaster is the oldest inland city in the USA and was settled in 1718. James Hamilton laid it out in building lots and out lots, and in 1730, it became the county seat and was named Lancaster after his home town in England. Because of its link to it?s English counterpart, Lancaster is known as the 'red rose city'. After becoming a borough in 1742, Lancaster became a city in 1818. The largest local National Historic District is found in downtown Lancaster where you will find some of the oldest and most distinctive buildings in this area including the oldest publicly owned farmers' market in the United States.
The Amish and their culture is what people think of when they think of Lancaster County or Pennsylvania Dutch County but there is also a lot of historical heritage, beautiful scenery and a variety of attractions. There are the usual busy streets and highways but once you turn off the main roads you are drawn into the relaxed and peaceful atmosphere with the rolling farmlands, teams of horses still ploughing fields, hand-crafted quilts hanging from clotheslines, and beautifully preserved covered bridges.
Lancaster is in southeastern Pennsylvania about 70 miles west of Philadelphia. It was a short trip for us, just staying one night before continuing on. Primarily we wanted to see the Amish people and their lifestyle, visiting a home and farm. I have no idea which motel we stayed at and I believe we may have had dinner at Red Lobster and breakfast at Denny’s (or somewhere similar). It was a very interesting experienced and I loved the contrast lifestyle to the normal city hustle and bustle.
