"Circus Town USA "

Hugo was founded in 1902 and was on the main line of the Frisco railroad. It is a centre of Choctaw county just 26 miles north of Paris, Texas; 20 miles south of Antlers; about 56 miles east of Durant. Just south of the city is the Red River Valley which is one of the most prolific agricultural regions in the southwest.

Hugo was part of Indian territory until 1907. Native Americans first explored the area then came the French in 1718. During the 1800's the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek made necessary the removal of many of the Chowtaw Indians in the area. Early re-settlement days were at Fort Towson, just 15 miles east of Hugo. Choctaw County and surrounding counties are rich with beautiful wilderness rivers and streams and numerous lakes. The very last treaty ending the Civil War was signed in Fort Towson in 1865 by Brigadier general Watie. He was the last Confederate general officer to surrender and lay down his arms.

Hugo has won merit as one of only 30 rural Enterprise Communities in the United States. Three of American’s biggest circuses make their winter home in Hugo – Circus Chimera and Culpepper-Meriweather, Kelly-Miller Brothers and Carson & Barnes. The town is also in the middle of a large agricultural area of Southeast Oklahoma. There They say you are 'never a stranger' in Hugo.

Been to Hugo only once. I see you discovered the "winter quarters" reason for the circus here. I was told that by a Holdenville man.
