Keeweechic's State of Victoria

by keeweechic - last update: Aug 1, 2006

Victoria is Australia's smallest mainland State. It was named after the reigning monarch at that time, Queen Victoria. It has only 1800km of coastline and was first settled in 1835. It is known as the Garden State for its landscape of rolling green hills and valleys.

To the west and bordering South Australia is desert wilderness with the Little Desert and the Wyperfeld National Parks which are popular for walking and exploring. In the north of the State is the might Murray River which takes up much of the border between Victoria and New South Wales. To the South and East is the Bass Strait, Southern Ocean and Tasman Sea with stark contrasts of golden beaches to skiing areas and mountain climbing.

Melbourne is the Capital of Victoria with something like 3 million people. To the west of Melbourne are the Grampians National Park with spectacular lookouts, walking trails and fishing. Phillip Island to the South east of Melbourne has the nightly procession of the Fairy Penguins coming ashore to their nests - a very popular tourist spot. Melbourne itself is Australia's cultural capital with many varied not to mention the restaurant capital with the most wonderful array of varied foods with more restaurants than you can imagine.

I enjoyed my time living in Victoria... I lived there 3 times. The weather has a lot to be desired but other than that... its a great state.
