    General Tips: Koala's
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Australia’s koala bear is not a bear at all but is actually a marsupial, related to the Wombat and Kangaroo. All carry their newborn in their pouch. Koala’s are found between south eastern South Australia and Queensland where there are an abundance of eucalyptus trees. A koala can live for between 10 and 20 years. Their diet consists of gum leaves – in fact they can eat about half a kg per day. Koalas tend to sleep most of the day and look for their food at night. The largest koala’s are found in Victoria while the smallest are found in North Queensland.

    General Tips: Wombats
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Wombats are marsupials that can grow to about 1.3 metres in length and weigh up to 36kg. They have been known to live up to 27 years in captivity. There are several varieties, the rarer one is the southern hairy-nosed wombat which has larger ears and his snout is covered with fine hairs. General Tips: Barking Owl
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: The barking owl is generally more common in northern Australia amongst the paperbark swamps although in the southern areas they are found near creeks and rivers especially which have River Red Gums. They also like open country with large trees for roosting and nesting. Outside of the breeding season, they feed on beetles and crickets however their usual hunting is of birds, several species of duck and in th south, rabbit is now the main prey. Occasionally small possums, bats and rodents are also hunted. They hung earlier in the evening and later in the morning. The Barking Owl is the most hawk-like of Australian Owls and it is given its name because of the strange dog like call it makes (like a ‘wuf wuf’ or ‘wuk wuk’). Sometimes also called the Winking Owl.

    General Tips: The Masked Owl
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: The Masked Owl can be found in a broad coastal band around most of mainland Australia and throughout Tasmania. In some states, they are given a special conservation status as their numbers are low. They can be found in forests, woodlands, timbered waterways and open country which border these areas. They need tall trees with suitable hollows for nesting and roosting as well as nearby areas for foraging. The Owls are territorial and pairs will remain in or near the territory all year round. They feed mainly on small mammals, such as rodents, rabbits and bandicoots although some also prey on possums, reptiles, birds and insects, hunting usually during the early hours of night.
