Australia, found in the south pacific, is the only country in the world to occupy a complete continent. It is the flattest and (after Antarctica) the driest and yet has extremes of climate.
It is a land of contrasts with rainforests, measureless plains, magical snowfields, deserts and productive croplands. About a third of Australia lies in the tropics.
It is generally thought that Aboriginal people began living on the continent 50,000 to 60,000 years ago, and some experts believe their inhabitancy may date back even a mind boggling, 100,000 years. |
