New Orleans is as delicious as the less criminal forms of sin. Mark Twain (1884)
New Orleans or N'Awlins goes by many names. 'The Big Easy' comes from the New Orleans philosophy of taking every easy. 'Crescent City' derives from the city's location nestled in the bend of the mighty Mississippi River.
The city is known as one of the most haunted cities in America with many stories and sightings of ghosts and spirits. Some say that the reason for all this activity is because of all the battles fought here not to mention all the reasons this city was once called the City of Sin. Certainly too, New Orleans is well known for its jazz and pioneers like Louis Armstrong, Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton and Sidney Bechet.
New Orleans has quite a varied past with many flags have flown over the her such as the French, the Spanish, the Confederate States of America and the United States of America although prior to all that the area was inhabited by Houma Indians for thousands of years. The city has certainly undergone its share of adversity in struggling to survive hurricanes and epidemics like yellow fever where 10,000 died in 1853, as well as Chalmette, a key battle in the War of 1812 which took place between British soldiers and a small group of militiamen commanded by General Andrew Jackson. The Battle of New Orleans was a huge victory for the Americans.
What you remember about New Orleans is diversified mix of people, the kaleidoscope of colours and sights all churned in with a ensemble of sounds and carte du jour of smells. |

DotFal Wed Aug 6, 2008 11:05 UTC I have a very old Jax bar lamp, its the old man holding a six-pack, he is partially bald and has a mustache, a striped shirt and so on. Is he worth anything? If so, how do I sell him. (It still works.) | lil_hooper_2002 Fri Mar 14, 2008 11:16 UTC Do you know if Robley still sells corn in the French Market? | JetlagCity Fri Apr 29, 2005 23:33 UTC Great rundown on all the things to see and do here! I can't wait to experience this place for the first time next fall.
