Destin, in the Florida panhandle has history dating back to the 7th century A.D. There are documents which show American Indians lived here, surviving off the fishing in these waters. Some 900 years later, Spanish explorers visited the coast. The wreckage from some of these ships are still being found in the areas.
Known as the "World's Luckiest Fishing Village", the largest and most highly equipped fishing fleet in the State of Florida docks at the harbour in Destin. The immediate history of this area traces back to fisherman Capt Leonard Destin who moved here from New London in Connecticut in 1845 and decided to settle there. Destin was the only channel passage to the Gulf of Mexico between Panama city and Pensacola and ended up being known as Destin’s East Pass.
Destin has grown from a small fishing village that it once was to a major tourist attraction for its beautiful coast with sugar white sands and emerald green waters. There are many recreational opportunities here including golf, watersports, diving and snorkelling.
In addition to fishing, recreational opportunities include golf, tennis and watersports, including diving and snorkeling.
You won’t find any tourist attractions on this page. Destin and the Gulf Coast area was a recharging for us after a pretty fast trip we were doing not to mention dodging tropical storms and hurricanes in this area. It was all too short a visit. |
