Mission Dolores and the Presidio were founded by the Spanish in 1776 but the actual settlement of the area by Europeans began in the 1830s. After the discovery of gold in 1848, thousands of prospectors poured through town on their way to the California gold fields. The new city expanded rapidly, was burned down, erupted with crime, and then finally emerged at the end of the 19th century as the largest and most influential American city west of the Mississippi. After the 1906 earthquake and fire, the city rebuilt fairly quickly. Its tremendous bridges were constructed, connecting to the shores of San Francisco Bay, and high-rise office towers started to spring up.
The Golden Gate Bridge and the SF-Oakland Bay Bridge connect the city with Marin Country and the East Bay.
