San Diego's history goes back thousands of years when during this time Yuman-speaking people inhabited the area. Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo landed in San Diego Bay in 1542 but Spain did not establish a colony there until 1769. It was during this time that Father Junipero Serra founded California's first European fortress and mission of San Diego with the intention of converting local native American's to Catholicism.
San Diego's birth as a modern city was in 1867, when a merchant from San Francisco founded New Town and over the next 60 years San Diego expanded with hundreds of new homes and businesses, hosted two world fairs and opened its harbour to US Navy ships. It has become a famed port for the Navy and a year-round vacation resort. It is also California's second largest city.
Also famous in San Diego is the zoo and Sea World, not to mention great beaches and a Mediterranean climate. |
