Disneyland is your land. Here, age relives fond memories of the past and youth may savour the challenge and promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams and the hard facts which have created America...with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world.
Walt Disney
Anaheim is now the tenth largest city in California. German farmers and vintners were its origins back in 1857 establishing vineyards and wineries. The original 200 acres is now the city's downtown area. The city's name is a mix of "Ana" from the nearby Santa Ana river and "heim," German for home. The early pioneers considered this location their "home by the river". In the 1870's a plague hit the area and wiped out the vineyards. In their place, groves of citrus trees were planted. The first oranges in were grown in Anaheim, Orange County. Other crops grown included walnuts and chili peppers. The first settlers were also musicians, writers and artists.
In the 1950's Walt Disney and Walt Knott changed everything with their creation of the first theme parks in Orange County. Disneyland changed the course for theme parks of the future and Knott's Berry Farm followed, expanding greatly over the past 30 years. The orange groves and vineyards which covered Anaheim and Buena Park disappeared and was replaced by miles of asphalt, hotels and convention centres.

| | Visit Disneyland - I've been twice to Disneyland and so far, I've never left myself enough time in Anaheim to see any of the other attractions there. The other well known park is Knotts Berry Farm and one day I will get there but for now Anaheim to me is Disneyland. Disneyland is for everyone, somewhere to go and be absorbed in the fantasy, be excited by the thrill of the rides, enchanted with the magic that is Disneyland. If you're free, take a tour with me and loose yourself for a while. All of our dreams can come true .... if we have the courage to pursue them. -Walt Disney More in my Travelogues |
