Cologne is the largest city of North Rhine-Westphalia and Germany’s fourth largest city overall. The city is also a major river port of Germany. Cologne is located on the left (west) bank of the Rhine River below Bonn. Settled since Roman times, the city achieved renown as a medieval commercial and manufacturing centre. Cologne is considered to be the Rhineland’s capital for culture and economy.

Cologne is distinctive and original, it apparently even has its own dialect and has been described as having its 'own mentality with a merry twinkle in its eye' . The city is famous for its twin-spired cathedral, the fabulous Koln Dom, the Rhine and great art. There are 2,000-year-old Roman sites, wonderful Romanesque churches, medieval styled houses as well as super-modern architecture. There are also world-famous museums and art galleries which house innumerable cultural and historical treasures.

First impressions you get are the cathedral spires which dominate the city. Cologne is Germany's oldest city and while it boasts to have more than a million inhabitants, it still has a neighbourly character to it.

I spent only one day and one night in Cologne in the year 2000 but the The Kolner Dom was the most impressive sight I ever tested, every hairy in my body was standing! great page Kay ;-D

The cathedral is amazingly beautiful especially at night. My uncle was in the basement playing the piano the day WWII ended. I didn't find that out until I visited there.
