The Kapellbruecke (Chapel Bridge) was constructed in the first half of the 14th century as a part of the city's fortifications and named after nearby St. Peter's chapel. Lucerne's most photographed monument was probably erected at the beginning of the 14th century. It measures approximately 140 feet from top to bottom. The tower was once used as a watch tower and it was a corner column on the city's defences. It was also used as a prison and a torture chamber and later as a room for the city archives.

The bridge is kind of a strange shape… It goes straight then veers off to about a 45 degree angle to head to the other side of the river. There seems to be no record why it was built this way.

The gable paintings on the interior of the bridge were painted by Heinrich Wägmann in the 17th century and depict the martyrdom of the city's two patron saints, St. Leodegar and St. Mauritius, as well as the heroic deeds of the Swiss Confederates and the city's history.

The Jesuit Church, which was built in 1666/73, is the first and one of the finest baroque churches in the country. Special points include the sacristy, the rich stucco work, the church treasures, and the penitential robe St. Nikolaus von Fluee. This magnificent church is dedicated to St. Franz Xaver. The main spires were completed in 1893.

The old Lucerne Town Hall stood on the Fischmarkt on the River Reuss. The very first Town Hall was on the Kornmarkt and was originally a staple-house. The city authorities built it in 1370. Then in 1505, part of the building was built up into a watch tower. Except for the tower, the whole building was rebuilt between 1602 and 1606. Its a wonderful Renaissance building with its mighty hip-roof, it has wood-panelled halls, stoves and a pulpit which was built into the tower in 1485. The Town Hall is today the seat of the Greater Town Council.

The 'Dying Lion of Lucerne' is one of the world's most famous monuments. In 1812 it was hewn out of natural rock in memory of the heroic death of the Swiss guards at the Tuileries in 1792. Mark Twain described the Lion of Lucerne as 'the saddest and most moving piece of rock in the world'.

Lake Lucerne is also known as the Vierwaldstättersee or 'Lake of the Four Forest Cantons, may be the most beautiful lake in Switzerland. It is certainly amongst the most spectacular, with mountains on all sides and forests coming down to the shore in many places and certainly worth doing a cruise if you have the time. The lake is irregularly shaped and offers a new view with every change of direction. Bahhofquai is where the steamers depart from, it is the pier which is right next to the railroad station.

Travelling by Paddle Steamer is a wonderful way to see the lakes perimeters. There are 5 paddles steamers (‘Stadt Luzern’, ‘Gallia’, ‘Schiller’, ‘Uri’ or ‘Unterwalden’ ) that run routes on the lake.
