Munich is the capital of Bavaria and is near to the very picturesque Bavarian Alps. Munich, or Munchen, is known as the "Home of the Monks" and traces its origins to the Benedictine monastery at Tegernsee. In 1157 Henry the Lion, Duke of Bavaria, granted the monks the right to establish a market where the road from Salzburg met the Isar River. There are some outstanding museums and art galleries. The architecture around the city is also spectacular. I found Munich to be a really lovely city and even though the weather was not good when I was there,on a clear blue day I can only imagine that with the alps in the background, it could surely be the most beautiful city in Germany. A visit south into Bavaria is certainly worth doing if you have a spare day. You can do a day trip with covers quite a bit of ground. More photos in my Travelogues. |
