At the time of my visit most currencies could be changed to rubles in Russia. The most common foreign currency then was US dollars, but presumably with the Euro covering so many other countries, that along with pounds sterling, Swedish kronor or whatever currency you normally use is acceptable as long as it is not too uncommon. Change money at any hotel's bank or at an official bank or exchange office, never on the street. Avoid changing large sums at one time, you may need less than you think. To go through the 'Nothing to declare' lane in the customs at Pulkovo airport you must not bring more than $50 in cash, but it is no problem if you bring more. Just choose the other lane. Value Added Tax : Russia has VAT that is currently 20% tax on the cost of all goods and services. This tax should be included in prices but make sure before you buy otherwise the price could end up being considerably more than you expect.

Summer temperature is approximately: 18 to 25 C, Winter temperature: -5 to -25 C. The longest seasons are spring and autumn (from March to June and from August to December). Autumn temperature: 6 to 15 C. .

I found when I bought small items (soft drinks, biscuits etc) in local stores, they did not provide you with a bag. If you wanted one, you had to buy one. .

Electricity throughout Russia is 220 volt/50 hz. The plug is the two-pin thin European standard. Be sure to bring your own converter as most places in Russia do not carry them. .

Tipping is increasingly expected at restaurants. Tip 10-15% depending on service. I had no idea how much to tip my guide after the 2nd day and I let her tell me $US10) the usual which may or may not have been the average but I was happy with her service. .
