Thailand is gateway to Indochina in south east Asia. Several countries share a border with Thailand such as Myanmar (Burma), Cambodia, Malaysia and Laos. The area covers almost 513,115 sq kms.

If you look you will see that the shape of the country is similar to the profile of an elephant with a long trunk stretching down the peninsular. At school, students are taught that their country resembles the shape of an ancient axe with the peninsular being the handle.
The history of the Thai people is interesting and varied. Chinese emigration followed then by the Indian emigration were all mixed with the native people. The result was a amalgamation of mixed cultural and religious backgrounds which breakdown to Buddhism 95%, Muslim 3.8%, Christianity 0.5%, Hinduism 0.1%, other 0.6%. Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country to avoid a Western or European domination. the Thai language is spoken quite differently in the South, the North or the North east, the written language is the same. There is a Thai expression, mai pen rai ("never mind") which usually communicates an all-purpose feeling that life should be savoured and enjoyed and any troubles should not be taken too seriously. Thai people have a good sense of humor, but they are also a reserved people who do not like vulgar or loud behavior, public displays of anger, or criticism of others. They are friendly and inquisitive by nature.

Delightful tour of Thailand, KW! ... it was nice to relive some memories from a short trip to Bangkok and Phuket that I made in 1990 :)

Excellent well researched tips! I'm not sure I will follow the Things to do tip and put my head in a crocodiles mouth, I've seen first hand how hard they can bite! Your tip on wearing a motorcycle helmet sounded almost a bit too first hand...? ;-)
