Volendam is a picture-perfect village about 20 miles North East of Amsterdam which has been around for more than six centuries There are narrow canals and old drawbridges, quaint houses and wonderful little harbour which makes this village quite charming and a delight to explore. The town was once a flouring fishing village but tourism is now the principal economic factor. The harbour was sealed off as part of an inland lake.

This delightful harbour was once filled with busy fishing vessels. It is a unique open harbour which is still in its original state. There are numerous tiny cottages which back onto the harbour.

There are some wonderful quaint little shops and cafes in and around the streets of Volendam. During holidays and on the Volendammerdijk many of the locals still wear their traditional costumes I believe. This is really the most delightful little town and we had all too brief a stop off here

Zaanse Schans is a charming country-side windmill village near Zaandijk, just 15 kms out of Amsterdam. Among old Dutch wooden houses and windmills you will find museums, shops, restaurants, a cheese farm, a wooden shoe factory and a craft centre. The windmills date back from the seventeenth and eighteenth century.

The Clog Factory at Zaanse Schans have all patterns and all sizes of clogs for you to choose from as well as souvenirs - even down to a little pair of clogs fridge magnet , which I happily collected. They also have demonstrations on how the clogs are made.
