Make time to visit at least one. Diamonds - the diamond trade was first introduced to Amsterdam during the 16th century and today the city continues to be one of the world's most important diamond centres. During the World War II, more than 2000 Amsterdam Jewish diamond polishers vanished into concentration camps in Germany and Poland and by the end of the War practically nothing was left of the trade. I went to Costers Diamonds where you can see them at work as well as view their showroom (of course). Make sure you don’t take your credit card – tempting.!!!

This house has the world's narrowest front of only 39 inches (1 metre) wide – only one window wide. Its found on the Singel canal and is barely wider than the front door. However, the rear sections of the house expand to more the size of an ordinary house.

You cannot visit Amsterdam without being curious and taking a stroll down the Red Light district. Walking down here is certainly safer in daylight hours but unfortunately you miss a lot that only the night brings out – the famous window models (although perhaps more of the aging ones). Walking through the alleys at night offers a much more eye-opening experience, but can be more than a little threatening. If you go, go with a few people or a larger group.

Anne Frankhuis (Anne Frank House. This little canal house in the centre of Amsterdam is where two Jewish families hid from the Nazis for more than two years during World War II. Anne Frank, the young daughter of one of the families, wrote her famous diary and the original of the diary is on display here. Her father had her diaries published in 1947 which has now become one of the most widely read books in the world.

Be sure to take a canal tour. The canals of course are one of the major attractions of Amsterdam. In daylight they are fascinating and charming but by night they become even more magical because a lot of the canal houses and bridges are beautifully illuminated. There are four main city centre canals but of course numerous smaller ones. Travelling around the city this way you will find very different to getting about on foot and it can be difficult to get your bearings.

Dam Square was once a popular place in the sixties with the flower power people and hippies camping out on the square. Today the square is one of the focal points of the city. The square is the physical centre of the city ever since the dam was built to keep the Zuiderzee (Southern sea) out. In the middle of the square is the National Monument, dedicated to the Dutch soldiers and members of the resistance who died during World War Two. On the west side of the square is Royal Palace
