Amsterdam is a city with a dual personality. On one hand it is a gracious and formal cultural centre, on the other, one of the most offbeat metropolis’ in the world. There is a romance about its canals at night and a wealth of cultural heritage in its great art museums.
Amsterdam's museums are filled with some of the best art in the western world. There are the home-grown Old Masters and Van Gogh as well as an abundance of contemporary art. The attractive canals and gabled houses provide popular subject matter for budding artists.
One of the prettiest times in the city seems to be spring when the parks and window boxes are filled with a colourful array of flowers and the branches of trees are not yet in full leaf, giving plenty of view of the lovely gabled buildings. A lot of the city is easily covered on foot or for something different, via the canals which really give a different perspective of the city. |
