Budapest is the capital of Hungary and is situated on one of the most beautiful areas of the Danube. The city is made up of two parts - Buda and Pest. Once two separate cities and only merging in 1873. The former is the older, more graceful part, with cobbled streets and medieval buildings, the latter is the commercial centre.
In the Buda section can be found the romantic castle district, Gellert Hill, the Citadella, The Royal Palace, Fisherman's Bastion, and the wonderful Matthias Church. On the Pest side are the Parliament; the Hungarian National Museum, Belvárosi Templom, Hungary's oldest church, the Museum of Fine Arts.
I just fell in love with Budapest. Although I was there in March, the climate seemed a little milder than in Germany and the Czech Rep where I had almost frozen my toes off. The people were very friendly. I found the younger ones in shops were only too happy to try and practise their limited english and ask questions. There are plenty of tours both by bus and walking tours or you can just wander very easily and safely yourself. My only regret is that I didn't have enough time in Budapest.
