Stanley Markets - Hong Kong
Stanley Markets Stanley Market Review

Stanley Markets is a wonderful place full of atmosphere to go and shop for clothing, trinkets and souvenirs, pictures/paintings or just stroll along the beach or have a cold beer at one of the bars there.

Some class it as a tourist trap, but I used to enjoy the trip out there as much as I enjoyed wandering around the shops.

Directions: Take the double decker blue and white bus from Central terminal, either No. 6, 6A or 260.

Tsim Sha Tsui - Hong Kong
Tsim Sha Tsui

Right on the very tip of Kowloon Peninsular, Tsim Sha Tsui (or TST) is known as a shopping paradise. You can wander for hours around all the shops and back streets and while a lot of the small touristy type shops seem the same, you will also find real diversity in others.

Nathan Road is the well known ‘drag’ through Kowloon and stretches for miles. It has been referred to as the ‘Golden Mile’. The road was named after a former Governor who designed the road. At night the area is brightly lit with dazzling neons and no matter how late at night, always seems buzzing.

Sogo - Hong Kong
Departement Stores: Sogo Department Stores Review

Sogo in Causeway Bay is the largest department store in Hong Kong. It first opened in 1985 and has been a landmark ever since. They say there are over 13 storeys although I don’t remember riding that many escalators – still it’s a big store. They have a wide variety including brand names of ladies and menswear, jewellery, leather goods, appliances, home accessories and in the basement is their supermarket. Something for everyone.

Central - Hong Kong
Central

Central is filled with local shops as well as very upmarket boutiques selling expensive brand names from Armani, Cartier, Lanvin to Gucci and Tiffany & Co. The Landmark and Prince’s Building have a lot of these high end stores.

There are also some good watch and jewellery stores in Central. Stanley St is good for its range and reasonably priced photographic equipment. There are some lanes also with stalls and small shops with very good prices.

Address: Central, Hong Kong Island.

Directions: Take the MTR to Central or the Star Ferry across to Hong Kong Island and just a few minutes walk.

Shanghai Tang - Hong Kong
Shanghai Tang

One especially different store to go to is Shanghai Tang – this store was very upmarket traditional and yet modern Chinese. The concept of the store was to revitalize Chinese design by intermingling traditional Chinese cultural fundamentals with 20th century style. The smell was just wonderful when you enter the store – it was quite unique to them and pleasant. David Tang really has created some wonderful designs in high quality fabric. Downstairs they also have goods for the home, again with the subtle Chinese influence. I bought several things – silver napkin holders, photo frames and wine coaster – all delicately made. Its pricey but worth the visit.
