  • Adjoining the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial hall on opposite sides of the square was the National Theatre and the National Concert Hall built in the Chinese style. There is a 25 ton bronze statue of the Generalissimo. The whole ground was divided into East, West, North and South in the arrangements of the buildings, with the statue of Chiang Kai-Shek facing China. The area has once been a jail.

    Things To Do: Martyrs Shrine
  • Tip Rating:
  • Martyrs Shrine is an example of classical Ming Dynasty, built in honour of those who died fighting for their country. Soldiers stand at the entrance to the shrine and are required to stand perfectly still until they are changed on the hour. There was a lot of restoration going on when I was there.

Things To Do: National Palace Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • National Palace Museum is a definite must to visit. I did it as part of a day tour of Taipei city and unfortunately there was limited time there. Few of the Taxi drivers speak English, so have it written in Chinese for them if you are attempting to go on your own.

There is more than 600,000 pieces of art and priceless masterpieces housed here - probably the worlds greatest collection of Chinese art. The history of his transit to Taipei is indeed quite a story.

    Things To Do: KEELUNG
  • Tip Rating:
  • Keelung is a port north of Taipei which overlooks the East China Sea. It has interesting history of the Spanish landing in 1626 in search of a natural harbour to expand trade in the Far East. The area is quite hilly rather than flat and because of it's location, it was an important for protecting the Taipei area from any attacks. Keelung used to be called Jilong which meant hencoop.

Things To Do: Views from the top of the Hill
  • Tip Rating:
  • Views from the top of the hill over Keelung city and harbour. The port was opened as a commercial port in 1863. In 1872 a navel defence headquarters was set up here and later the railroad was linked to the port. During World War 11 in 1939 the port was heavily bombed and almost all of the port facilities was destroyed. After the war, rebuilding began and today Keelung has become one of the major ports in the world.

Great albums!! However I couldn't see the much more than the Kuomintang's version of history in your article. The modernisation started when the Japanese ruled the island, they made Taiwan one of the most advanced place in Asia.
