Keeweechic's Oahu

by keeweechic - last update: Jul 31, 2006

Named the 'The Gathering Place' which was in reference to meetings held by the various chiefs of Hawaii's then independent islands. This island became a mid-Pacific port of call in the early 18th century which eventually led to Oahu becoming named the capital of the Hawaiian islands. With the trade that was brought into the islands, came an assortment of races which were welcomed by the Polynesians and gave the 'gathering place' a new meaning. Oahu is quite a contrast with lush vegetation on the windward coast to a dryer landscape on the Honolulu side. White sandy beaches stretch for miles and deep clear waters are what Hawaii is known for. Often a stopover for a few days to break a long trip.

I first spent a week in Hawaii on my return from the UK. A year later after living in Singapore my partner and I had to spend 2 months living in Hawaii (business related) which of course was a hardship (not). It was unexpected and we were in between homes (Singapore and Melbourne). Our accommodation for these 2 months was in a hotel in Waikiki and all our meals were taken out. I must admit after about a month of this leisurely lifestyle, 'rock fever' as it is known, started to set in. This was what was referred to as feeling a little isolated out there on an island in the Pacific. It was November/December and the weather was quite a bit cooler than what people normally think of Hawaii as being. For 2 weeks it rained solid. However the opportunity to spend so much time there gave me the chance to do a few new things like parasailing and gliding. We also spent Thanksgiving weekend over on the Big Island and experienced the leadup to Christmas with all the decorations and street parades.

More in my Travelogues.
There are miles and miles of idyllic, sandy beaches on all four of Oahu's shores which are deserted beaches during the week. The weekends are a little different.
