Goldenes Dachl: The Golden Roof

  • The Golden Roof in the old town is the most well-known landmark in Innsbruck, it was a balcony for the Imperial Court. Goldene Dachl (Golden Roof) is composed of 2,600 gilded tiles. Emperor Maximilian loved Innsbruck and from here he managed his political activities in Europe.

    The Goldene Dachl now serves as memorial for this great man and his political, economic and cultural influence on Europe.

    Hofburg: The Hofburg

  • The Hofburg a 15th-century imperial palace and former seat of the provincial sovereigns. It was adapted to a baroque style under Maria Theresa in the eighteenth century. The Rococo state apartments are nothing exceptional except for the huge ballroom.

    Hofburg: The Ballroom

  • This is the Ballroom. In most of the rooms, the decoration and furniture in is not of the same date of origin, but of the same style. Most pieces of furniture are of the 19th century.

    Maria Theresien Strasse: Maria-Theresien-Srasse

  • Innsbruck's main artery is Maria-Theresien-Srasse famed for the view north towards the great rock wall of Nordkette, the mountain which dominates the city. Halfway along the street is the Annasaule, a column supporting a statue of the virgin but named after St Anne, who appears at the base and was erected to commemorate the retreat of the Bavarians on St Annes Day, July 26 1703.

    Triumphpforte: The Triumphal Arch

  • The Triumphal Arch (Triumphpforte) is in Maria Theresa St and was built in advance of celebrations marking the marriage in 1756 of Maria Theresa's son Leopold with a Spanish lady, Maria Ludovica. Leopold later became Emperor Leopold II of Austria. The ashlars stem from the old Georgstor, a city gate. Leopold's father died on the day of the wedding.

    Hofkirche: Court Church

  • Court Church with Silber Chapel (Hofkirche) was built from 1553-1563 under Ferdinand I. Contains the empty tomb of Emperor Maximilian I, the sarcophagus with the statue of the kneeling Emperor. On the sides are 24 marble reliefs recording Maximilian's reign. 28 large bronze statues of his ancestors and relatives stand on guard over the tomb.

    The tombs and memorials of Andreas Hofer and other heroes of the uprising against Napoleon are also there. The monument is the most important and historical in Tyrol.

  • These bronze statues surround Emperor Maxmilian's I grave There are 28 of these larger than life figures which are called the the Black Knights. They were created by Schwarze Mander.

     Innsbruck is so beautiful! Unfortunately I missed the restaurants and bars, would have loved to be served by "your" waiter!
