Keeweechic's Salzburg

by keeweechic - last update: Aug 15, 2008

The capital city of the north central Austrian federal state of Salzburg. Salzburg literally means 'salt fortress' and the Salzburg riches were based on the revenues from the nearby salt mines which were the foundation for the creation of all the wonderful churches, palaces and other architecture scattered throughout the city. For centuries the city was ruled by prince-archbishops and was incorporated into the Hapsburg empire early in the 19th century. The City of Salzburg, with all it well known sights and tourist attractions, is among the world's most beautiful cities. The villages on the outskirts of the city as you are driving in are just as unique in character and the countryside, stunning. It is well renowned for the magnificent music that was created and is still being created and performed within the city.

You cannot forget that this is Mozart's birthplace as his photo, statue, print is seen everywhere and on everything. All around the city are music conservatories, theatres and open-air amphitheatres, it is the 'Sound of Music' city. Over the city hovers the medieval Hohensalzburg Fortress and you can get spectacular views of the city from here.
Salzburg is only a short distance from the Austrian-German frontier, so you can easily explore many of the attractions in nearby Bavaria. There is an abundance of architectural and cultural attractions and you can not possibly try and take all of it in during a short stay.
