Liechtenstein is a principality between Austria and Switzerland, right in the heart of Europe. It is one of the smallest independent sovereign states of Europe along with San Marino (in Italy) and Andorra in the Pyrenees (between Spain and France). Only about 25km long and 6km wide, with a magnifying glass and a good map of Europe you will find it. This tiny little country has history dating back to the 14th century.
In 1719 the principality was established within the Holy Roman Empire but it wasn’t until 1806 that it became a sovereign state. During World War I, Austria was a close ally but that all changed later when Liechtenstein chose to remain neutral.
Liechtenstein has no army of its own and is a monarchy therefore with its independent status, it has become a tax haven which has supported some outstanding economic growth. They enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the world and unemployment is very rare. |
The capital of Liechtenstein is Vaduz. Liechtenstein now has a State Art Collection which contains works by Rubens which are considered to be among the greatest in the World, a Postage Stamp Museum famous world-wide for its stamps and Ski Museum which covers over 100 years of skiing history.
Unless you are going to Liechtenstein for skiing or hiking, then you are probably just passing through. There is little else to see and there is usually only 3 reasons why people to visit - to collect stamps, to get a stamp in the passport and to say that you have actually visited this little country. I was a passer-through, stopping only for a couple of hours to take a look, buy my postcards and of course the stamps, but that is probably all the time you will need. Prices are fairly expensive. |
