Lying on the banks of the Danube River, Vienna is the largest city and the capital of Austria. The first mention of the city was in 1137 although it is believed to have existed from around 500 BC. For 6 centuries Vienna was reigned by the Habsburgs where much of the city’s architecture derived from. Through the years and reigns, the styles changed dramatically. Walking along this beautiful boulevard you will find a collection of buildings in varying styles. The University of Vienna (originally founded in 1365) was rebuilt in a neo-Italian Renaissance style. Across the park is the City Hall, a neo-Flemish Gothic structure. The famous State Opera House (Stadtsoper) is reminiscent of early French Renaissance buildings,
Much of the imperial style can be found in the grand boulevards also. The Ringstrabe (Ring St) in the heart of the city replaced a large horseshoe shaped wall in which the city was surrounded but was torn down in 1857. Vienna is a pretty city, almost half is covered by parks and gardens.
This sophisticated and charming city radiates a history of culture, music and art. Many great composers called Vienna their home.. Many great composers called Vienna home. When you think of Vienna you envisage angelic boys voices, swirling elaborate ball gowns waltzing across stately ballrooms to the Blue Danube with white gilded horses and carriages waiting outside grandiose palaces. While that is not exactly what you might see, the feeling and the imagination can certainly work wonders.

We had a great week in Vienna this summer (northern summer that is). Such a beautiful city. leyle
Vienna is lovely, It give me a feeling that I had been there before. The tram system is old, but beautiful in its own unique way. Thanks for sharing.
Delighted to see another Vienna fan! Shame you missed the Opera but how clever of you to leave something special to do upon your return!
Fabulous Vienna page with brilliant photos. Brings back many memories of my days in Vienna. Nevertheless, I think that the Vienna Card is a Tourist Trap. It is too expensive compared to the normal prices. :o)
Fantastic my Grand mother used to say she liked Vienna more than any other city in Europe, because of people there! I have to visit one day! Great updates Kay :-)
Beautiful Vienna page (btw I am from Vienne, lol) but one comment: the tram is not for free! If you get cought by plainclothed controllers you pay some 60 Euros!
Lovely page, seeing a performance at the Opera here would be magical! Great Photos, you hotel looks a wonderful place to stay. Well Done (~_~)
Very interesting, especially how we had different experiences.
Very good infos and great pics! a night in the opera is a really great event you will never forget ... I saw "Carmen" with Agnes Baltsa and Neil Shicoff, and it was one of the greatest performances I have ever seen ...
Beautiful city with marvelous architecture and glorious palaces such as Winter, Schonbrunn, Belvedere. Great hotel tip and transportation tips. Excellent photos and intelligent, interesting, helpful text.
