Glasgow was originally founded in around 1175AD. Located on the banks of the River Clyde, Glasgow was once a world centre for shipbuilding, producing such famous names as the QE2, Britannia and the Cutty Sark. Glasgow is Scotland's first and largest city and gateway to the beautiful West Coast and the Highlands of Scotland. Glasgow's city centre is well planned in an easy grid pattern although one way streets are daunting to those who do not know the city.
Glasgow's name derives from the Gaelic meaning of 'The Dear Green Place' and you will find many parks and gardens which live up to its name. Once grey and dingy looking, Glasgow has been cleaned up and transformed to reveal the original sandstone and new modern shopping arcades and entertainment centres brighten the city. The Highlands (north) are one of the last wilderness areas in Europe from the rugged northern coast, the barren windswept moors, the towering mountain and out to the charming islands. Dotted in between are historic little fishing villages and cosy little towns.
We set off travelling up through Glasgow and the West Coast and came down through the middle and over to the East Coast and Edinburgh (separate Travel page), missing the top part of the East Coast. We met some wonderful people along the way and sampled a good amount of the local 'beverage'. I have attempted to put these places in order although without a decent map now I was struggling. However, I think most of it is pretty close. |
