Newcastle-Upon-Tyne is a cosmopolitan city in the north east of England, in the Tyne and Wear region, which has a proud heritage stretching back 2,000 years. It is the largest city between Leeds and Edinburgh and is the regional capital of the North East of England. There are museums, galleries, shopping and plenty of restaurants and nightlife. Further east, North Shields with it's busy fish quay, and South Shields, known for its Catherine Cookson connections, face each other across the mouth of the Tyne. The surrounding area is one of Britain’s most attractive regions, famous for its miles of beautiful and unspoiled scenery, historic castles and cathedrals and its rich industrial heritage. There is the Northumberland National Park where Hadrians Wall is located.
Newcastle’s about 100 miles south of the Scottish border. It is a good base for seeing the many diverse sights in the region.
I didn’t spend too much time in Newcastle city itself but rather doing shorter trips around the region. |
