Keeweechic's Oban

by keeweechic - last update: Aug 15, 2006

Oban is known as the 'Gateway to the Isles'. The town and surrounding area has been an inspiration to artists, authors and composers for centuries with the beautiful bay and docks. Oban was once given the royal seal of approval from Queen Victoria when she named Oban as being ‘one of the finest spots we have seen'. The town has become one of Scotland’s favourite and most popular holiday towns of the west coast. It is accessible by rail and road and only about 3 hours from Glasgow or Edinburgh.

The town was first established in 1786 as a fish market. The history of those years still exists today on the docks every Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

It is the ideal place to stay and explore the surrounding area as we did. Those I have listed as off the beaten path we did either enroute in a day to Oban or from Oban also in a day. Nothing is very far.
