This huge monument sits on the opposite southern banks of the Targus River. It was modeled on the famous Cristo Redentor in Rio De Janeiro. The statue of Christ with outstretched arms stands at 28 metres and is mounted on a pedestal which is some 82metres high. You can take a lift then some stairs to the top. Location : Santuario Nactional do Cristo Rei, Alto do Pragal, Lamada.

Built between 1747 and 1794 the pink and white Palacio Nacional de Queluz was the home of Pedro III and Queen Maria I. Also known as the Portuguese Versailles, the palace is located just 15kms north west of the city. It was the favourite summer residence of the Royals. Queen Maria who was actually the Kings niece outlived her husband who died in 1786 and when her son died of smallpox in 1788, she went insane. Location : % Largo do Palacio

Originally the land was made up of a lot of smaller estates which the Prince (as he was at the time). The size of the property has now been reduced to around 37 acres. Palace of Queluz is open 10.00am – 5.00pm Wed to Mon. Location : Largo do Palacio

The formal gardens of the palace are dotted with statues in amongst the fountains and box hedges. The main windows of the palace look out over the upper gardens which were often used for entertaining. Location : Palace of Queluz, Largo do Palacio

The semi-formal gardens such as the Hanging Gardens and the Malta Gardens were created by Jean Baptiste Robillion a French Architect who also was involved in the extensions. There are a number of fountains as well as a canal which the Royal family used for boating. Location : Palace of Queluz, Largo do Palacio

This room looks a lot like the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles. Mirrored doors, Venetian crystal chandeliers and gold covered caryatids which support the ceiling. There are beautiful gilded statues of Atlas which were created by Silvestre Faria Lobo. Location : Palace of Queluz, Largo do Palacio

The music room was once part of the smaller residence of Prince Pedro III until his marriage to Queen Maria when the small hunting lodge was extended to eventually become the palace. Within the room are several instruments on display and above the piano is a portrait of Maria. Location : Palace of Queluz, Largo do Palacio

The Corridor of Sleeves or Sala de Mangas has on display some wonderful Chinoiserie tiled panels in mostly white blue and yellow which are supposed to represent the continents as well as the seasons. The gallery or corridor leads to the state rooms and was the only room to survive a fire in 1934. Location : Palace of Queluz, Largo do Palacio

The French Empire Room was the apartments of Princess Maria Francisca Benedita. It was given the name because of the French Empire style which was in fashion in France during the 19th century. The furniture is of mahogany and in some cases with bronze decoration. Location : Palace of Queluz, Largo do Palacio.

This Sala das Merendas or picnic room was the private dining room in amongst the royal apartments. There are 4 canvas paintings on the wall which represent the type of hunting picnics the royals used to enjoy. There is beautiful Chinese dishes from the Qin dynasty, Qianlong period as well as 18th century silver. Location : Palace of Queluz, Largo do Palacio.
