Lisbon or Lisboa is the largest city of Portugal. It is also the capital and has the distinction of being the westernmost capital in Europe. In 1755, the city suffered extensively under an earthquake which killed between some 60,000 and 90,000 people not to mention destroying around 85% of the city. Lisbon had experienced many earthquakes prior to this, but this was the worst. At the time it had one of the largest cities in Europe with a population to match. Following this the city was totally rebuilt.
Apparently the downtown area of Lisbon (the Baxia) is being considered for a UNESCO World Heritage site. There are some wonderful sights to visit in this area such as the ruins of Sao Jorge Castle and the Lisbon Cathedral. The Alfama is the oldest area of the city and is charming with its narrow lanes and colourful buildings. |
| | Lisbon was a pleasant surprise… It was part of the tour I was taking and not high on my list of the cities I most wanted to see but I was quickly changed my mind and enjoyed my time, albeit short, in Lisbon. |
