A Municipality and a town, Sintra is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and as such, has become a huge tourist attraction in the regional district of Lisbon. Lying on the slopes of the Serra De Sintra mountain range the town has everything from thick forests to beautiful gardens. The district of Sintra are divided into three centres: Sao Pedro de Sintra, Estefania and Sinta-Vila which is the old quarter and probably most visited.

The area has been visited and inhabited by many over the centuries. In the early days the Celts named Sintra “The Hills of the Moon’ or Mons Lunae, due to the waters and lush vegetation which they found so attractive. The Moorish lords also found the area attractive and came to the area for their summer retreat. Later the Portuguese Christian monarchs also sought out their summer vacations in Sintra.

Sintra was a very quick visit and there was so much more to see such as Pena Palace, the Museum of Modern Art, the Church of Santa Maria and Sao Pedro De Penaferrim. Allow yourself a good day to visit Sintra, more if possible.
