"Keeweechic's Azeitao " a Vila Nogueira de Azeitão Travel Page by keeweechic

Azeitao is a small and relatively quiet village which is divided into two sections – Vila Fresca de Azeitao and Vila Nogueira de Azeitao . Just 25 kms south of Lisbon, the town is situated at the foot of the Serra da Arrabida which has some of the oldest living vegetation of the Mediterranean region. Aside from the town itself you can visit some of the impressive country palaces or Quintas lying around the area. Or perhaps visit the cellars in the town which offers samplings of the famous moscatel wine as well as other red and white table wine.

The region is a rich grape growing area which produces some very unique wines especially red wine. Agriculture is also very important with its olive growing and cheese. The latter is produced from unpasteurised sheep’s milk and has a thin, soft yellow crust with a bit of a sour taste.

Sao Simao Arte is the regions largest ceramic factory and can be found in Azeitao. Their prices are reported to be very reasonable and less than most retail stores

Azeitao for me was a short stop to do some wine tasting at Fonseca Winery.
