Puerto Lapice (lah-pee-say) is a small little town on the crossroads of A4 and N-410 in Castilla La Mancha, 67kms from Ciudad Real. The town was originally called Port Sales Lapiche but has had other names such as Port of Pages and Puerto Pencils. The town was declared a municipality, even with only 83 residents, in the late 18th century during Carlos III’s reign. At the time there was only a couple of inns available for those passing through. The municipality borders the Province of Toledo.

An historical little town with possibly Roman origins. It is thought that the town was originally encircled by walls of an ancient Roman fortress. It became well known by the writings of well known Spanish writer, Miguel de Cervantes who wrote the book based on the adventures of ‘Don Quixote de la Mancha’ and Sancho, his squire. In Cervantes book, Quixote was knighted in the town’s inn. The character can be seen in many forms throughout the town and they certainly base their tourism on him. There is even a ‘route’ of Don Quixote (or Quijote). Today the population is still small at around 1,050.

Wow, I get to be the first one here. Don Quixote was a favorite of mine and my son learned it in school too. It is wonderful story. I enjoyed the tour of Puerto Lapice.
