Located in central Spain in the province of Toledo, for which it is the capital, and in the Castilla-La Mancha.
Toledo is known as the Imperial City (La Ciudad) and is a important city for his medieval history. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986. The city was built on a hill partly surrounded by the Tagus River. Only 70kms from Madrid, the town can be visited on a day trip.

In 192BC the Romans conquered the already established town. In 712 it was then seized by the Muslims and it was under their rule that the town achieved economic and cultural prominence and able to achieve harmonious living between the Christians, Jews and Muslims. It remained that way until Alfonzo VI of Castilla retook the city in 1035 for the Christian Monarchs and creating a prosperous capital of the empire. When the city became too big, Felipe II moved the capital to Madrid. The city withstood many battles including the War of the Spanish, the Peninsular War and the Spanish Civil War.
